Trump Signals Possible Summit With Putin and Zelensky Amid Ongoing War in Ukraine

Trump says there’s a “good prospect” of a summit with Putin and Zelensky following high-level talks in Moscow. While hopes for a quick settlement remain low, the US has warned of new sanctions against Russia. Ukraine, meanwhile, continues to face deadly attacks amid renewed international diplomatic activity.

US President Donald Trump has indicated there is a “good prospect” of a summit involving Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, following what he described as “very good talks” between his envoy and Putin in Moscow. The meeting, which took place just days ahead of Trump’s ceasefire deadline for Russia, has reignited speculation over whether a peace deal could soon be brokered.

Speaking at the White House, Trump did not confirm if both leaders had agreed to a summit but stated the likelihood was high. He also mentioned that he had briefed European allies and stressed that there was a shared consensus on the urgent need to end the war.

The Kremlin described the talks between Putin and Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, as “constructive,” though details were vague. Images shared by Russian media showed the two men smiling and shaking hands inside the Kremlin, suggesting a cordial atmosphere.

Ukrainian President Zelensky confirmed discussions with Trump following Witkoff’s visit, reiterating that Russia would only seriously consider peace once it faced financial exhaustion. Trump has warned that failure to halt the war could result in severe secondary sanctions for those trading with Russia.

Despite Trump's earlier claims that he could end the war “in a day,” Russia continues to launch deadly airstrikes on Ukrainian cities, including a recent attack on a holiday camp in Zaporizhzhia that killed two people. Meanwhile, the US has approved an additional $200 million in military support to Ukraine.

Though expectations for a swift peace remain low, Trump’s recent moves—along with escalating pressure on Russia—suggest that diplomatic momentum may be building, even as violence continues on the ground.
