To tackle the rising menace of child sexual abuse, mainly perpetrated by British Pakistani male gangs, UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman plans to introduce a new legal duty that mandatorily requires its citizens to report any such instances of abuse. The specific details of this plan are to be released by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday.
Aims of The New Law
The new mandatory reporting law seeks to target criminals that hold cultural attitudes without leaving the citizens in the dilemma of being culturally insensitive. Braverman told the BBC, "The perpetrators are groups of men, almost all British Pakistani, who hold cultural attitudes completely incompatible with British values". She also mentioned that "They have been left unchallenged both within their communities and by wider society, despite their activities being an open secret," adding that there has been a "wilful turning of a blind eye, a failure to act and that silence has enabled this abuse".
The senior Indian-origin Cabinet minister has specified that people working with vulnerable groups and children in a safeguarding role like social workers and teachers have to be particularly vigilant and "can't get away with inaction". She stated, "What we've seen is a practice whereby vulnerable, white, English girls, sometimes in care, sometimes who are in challenging circumstances, being pursued and raped and drugged and harmed by gangs of British Pakistani, men who've worked in child abuse rings or networks." In addition, she also remarked, “We've seen institutions and state agencies, whether it's social workers, teachers, the police turn a blind eye to these signs of abuse out of political correctness, out of fear, of being called racists, out of fear, of being called bigoted." While talking about the "predominance" of certain ethnic groups she drew attention to several reports that validated her statement, "I say British Pakistani males, who hold cultural values totally at odds with British values".
The progress in the legal system is being lauded by various child charities for the protection of children against sexual abuse.
