The Northern Lights dazzled the UK with a rare, vivid display of celestial lights dancing across night skies from Scotland to southern England, sparked by a powerful geomagnetic storm.
The Northern Lights which are a very rare occurrence in the United Kingdom appeared on Friday night and the people who observed the sky were able to witness a spectacular celestial display. The bright green, pink, and purple colors, which were seen in the night skies from northern Scotland to the southern English coastline, were so beautiful that they could turn anyone into a spectator.
The auroras, aka the aurora borealis, were a manifestation
of one of the most powerful geomagnetic storms in decades. The National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration of the United States had issued a rare warning
before the event since these storms may harm equipment like satellites and
power grids.
"It was a mind-blowing scene," commented David Severn from East Sussex's Ashdown Forest and he witnessed the lights. "I could not take my eyes off the sky. The colors were burning and glowing – curtains of green and pink shining in the entire sky. It was just stunning. "
However, it is generally the northern latitudes of Scotland and Northern Ireland that offer the best views, but on Friday the clear skies allowed people all over the UK to catch a glimpse of the aurora. From London streets to the coastal towns of Devon and Cornwall, the word passed around of the aurora borealis, which was much more spectacular than usual.
A weather forecaster had forecasted the conditions perfectly, saying "It's perfect conditions, the skies are pretty clear at the moment". As per the weather forecast, the lights may be seen again on the night of Saturday in some places.
The Aurora Borealis occurs when solar particles that are electrically charged interact with the gases found in Earth's upper atmosphere which in turn leads to a glowing display of colors. The main greens are formed by oxygen while nitrogen atoms give blue, pink, and purple colors.
