In the wake of the recent violence in Manipur, tripartite talks have been scheduled between the government of India, the state government of Meghalaya and Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council during the first week of June, 2023.

What is the Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC)?

The Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council is a militant organization, functional in Meghalaya. It advocates for the rights and living conditions of mainly the Khasis, Garos and Jaintias. However, the organization has also been found guilty of creating circumstances to disrupt the peace of Meghalaya on several junctures.

Purpose of the Tripartite Talk

While the authorities are already busy tackling violence that erupted in Manipur, complications have come to the fore from the state of Meghalaya. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma spoke about the current situation and said, “As we all are aware that the Ministry of Home Affairs is quite busy with the different departments in Manipur and it has made things slightly more complicated.”

While the Central and state governments have pushed the need for peace talks and restoring absolute law and order in the state of Manipur again, the Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council has asserted that such peace talks are impossible without officially pardoning the Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council and drawing up an agreement of amnesty.
