US-India Partnership at Risk: Lawmakers Alarmed Over Foiled Murder Plot

Indian-American lawmakers in the US Congress expressed worry over an indictment involving an Indian national, allegedly part of a foiled murder plot against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a designated Khalistani terrorist. Concerned about the impact on US-India relations, they emphasized the need for a thorough investigation by the Modi government.

Indian-American lawmakers in the US Congress, including Ami Bera, Pramila Jayapal, Ro Khanna, Raja Krishnamoorthi, and Shri Thanedar, jointly issued a statement, highlighting their concerns about the allegations against Nikhil Gupta, an Indian government official implicated in a murder-for-hire scheme targeting Pannun. A classified briefing by Biden Administration officials prompted their response.

They appreciated the briefing on the Department of Justice’s indictment of Gupta and stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of American citizens. While acknowledging India's formation of an inquiry committee, they emphasized holding those responsible accountable to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Expressing deep concern over the allegations, the lawmakers underscored the significance of the US-India partnership but warned that failure to address these actions adequately could damage this partnership. Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), led by Pannun, welcomed the Congress's commitment to protecting citizens' rights.

Nikhil Gupta faces charges of murder-for-hire and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire, with potential prison terms. Federal prosecutors allege his involvement with an Indian government employee in the failed assassination attempt on Pannun, a dual citizen of the US and Canada.

Gupta's arrest in the Czech Republic and India's initiation of a high-level probe underscore the seriousness of the issue. His appeal against extradition proceedings has also gained attention, with the Indian Supreme Court considering the sensitive nature of the case. US President Biden reportedly discussed the matter with Prime Minister Modi, emphasizing its impact on bilateral relations during the G20 Summit.
