Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat made history at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday by becoming the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic wrestling final. After defeating Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semifinal, Phogat secured at least a silver medal, adding to India's medal tally in Paris.
Phogat's journey to the final was remarkable, beginning with a stunning upset over four-time world and defending Olympic champion Yui Susaki of Japan in the opening match. She continued her impressive run by winning her quarterfinal against Ukraine's Oksana Livach before clinching the semifinal victory.
In an emotional video call with her mother following the historic win, a tearful Phogat promised, "Gold lana hai! Gold (I will bring gold)." The touching moment captured the culmination of Phogat's challenging journey, which included a devastating injury at the 2016 Rio Olympics and a disappointing quarterfinal loss in Tokyo 2020.
Phogat's path to Paris was fraught with obstacles, including accusations of misconduct, suspension by the Wrestling Federation of India, and a protracted battle against the former WFI chief over allegations of sexual misconduct. Despite considering retirement, she persevered and qualified for her third straight Olympics after dropping to the 50kg category.
