In a heart-pounding moment, Virat Kohli, a prominent name in international cricket, came agonizingly close to matching his idol Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most centuries in One Day International (ODI) cricket. This nail-biting incident unfolded during the 33rd game of the ongoing World Cup, adding a layer of anticipation and sentiment to the tournament.

On Thursday, November 2, during the match against Sri Lanka, the Delhi-born cricketer displayed his exceptional skills. However, he was thwarted when his individual score reached 88, just a hair's breadth away from Sachin Tendulkar's milestone. What made this moment even more poignant was that it occurred at Wankhede Stadium, Tendulkar's home ground.

This is the second time in this high-stakes tournament that Virat Kohli narrowly missed reaching a century. His earlier disappointment came in the 21st match when he was dismissed for 95 while facing New Zealand at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium (HPCA) in Dharamsala.

During his match against Sri Lanka, Kohli began his innings with his signature style, swiftly running between the wickets to maintain scoreboard pressure on the Sri Lankan team. He took the crease in the very first over of India's innings after the early fall of skipper Rohit Sharma, who was dismissed for just 4 runs. Virat's remarkable maturity and game awareness were on full display.

Facing three consecutive dot balls, Kohli finally broke through with a stylish boundary that found its way between the wicketkeeper and leg gully. From that point onward, the charismatic right-hander consistently found gaps in the field and kept India's momentum surging forward.

Virat Kohli's spectacular innings has now placed him as the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament, with 442 runs, trailing South Africa's Quinton de Kock, who leads with 545 runs. With two more games remaining in the round-robin stage of the tournament, Kohli stands a good chance of surpassing de Kock to claim the top spot.

Notably, Virat Kohli has already secured three centuries in World Cup history. His first century came during his World Cup debut in the 2011 edition when he played against Bangladesh at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. The second century was against arch-rivals Pakistan during the 2015 edition in Adelaide. Cricket enthusiasts around the world now eagerly await Kohli's inevitable ascent to the pinnacle of ODI centuries, a feat that has been a long-cherished dream for him and his fans.
