Aspiring female wrestlers in Haryana are hopeful that Vinesh Phogat’s potential win in the assembly elections could bring safety reforms to wrestling arenas. Many young athletes see her as a champion of their cause, believing she will address issues facing female wrestlers and advocate for better conditions in the sport.
Aspiring female wrestlers in Haryana are placing their hopes on Olympian Vinesh Phogat’s political journey, as she contests the Julana seat in the upcoming assembly elections. Following allegations of sexual harassment against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, many parents pulled their daughters out of wrestling arenas, fearing for their safety. Phogat, alongside Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, led protests in Delhi, demanding justice and change for athletes.
Parents' concerns have caused a significant drop in the number of young women attending akhadas (wrestling arenas). However, many believe Phogat’s potential win could bring about a safer environment for female wrestlers. A young wrestler revealed that her father only resumed allowing her to train after months of hesitation, and he now accompanies her to ensure her safety.
Vinesh Phogat's struggle and achievements, including her performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, have inspired many young athletes. Supporters see her as a beacon of hope who can advocate for increased safety measures and funding for akhadas, which currently rely on limited government support and community donations. Mohit Malik, the owner of Meher Singh Akhada in Rohtak, emphasized that Phogat's journey could encourage families to support their daughters in wrestling once again.
