At least three people have died, and 20 others have been hospitalized in Tambaram, near Chennai, with local residents suspecting contaminated drinking water as the cause. The deceased have been identified as Varalakshmi (88), Mohana Rangan (32), and Thiruvedi.

Officials have not immediately confirmed the cause, though they have sent water samples from five locations in the Pallavaram Cantonment and Kamarajar Nagar areas for testing. Health camps have been set up for residents, and the state government is awaiting post-mortem and water test results.

Some residents reported symptoms of diarrhea and sickness after drinking water with a foul odor, which they believe was contaminated. One affected individual, Sadasivam, said he had been ill since the previous night. Residents also raised concerns about longstanding water supply issues, with one claiming that sewage had mixed with the water, leading to the deaths.
