The Amarnath Yatra has been suspended due to heavy rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir, halting pilgrim movement on both Pahalgam and Baltal routes. Authorities cite safety concerns and will reassess based on weather conditions. The annual pilgrimage began on July 3 and is expected to end on August 9.

The Amarnath Yatra has been temporarily suspended due to incessant heavy rains lashing parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities have halted the movement of pilgrims on both Pahalgam and Baltal routes to ensure their safety, as weather conditions deteriorated further on July 30.
Divisional Commissioner of Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, confirmed that no pilgrim convoys will be allowed to travel from the Bhagwati Nagar base in Jammu to Baltal and Nunwan camps on July 31. This marks the second time the pilgrimage has been paused this month following a similar suspension on July 17.
In Kashmir, Divisional Commissioner Vijay Kumar Bidhuri stated that persistent rainfall since early morning has made the tracks from Baltal and Chandanwari unsafe for travel. The Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) also announced the suspension on social media platform X, citing safety concerns due to adverse weather.
The annual pilgrimage, which began on July 3, has seen more than 3.93 lakh devotees visit the sacred Amarnath cave shrine so far. Located in South Kashmir at a height of around 3,888 metres, the shrine is accessible via two routes: the 48-kilometre traditional trail from Pahalgam and the shorter, steeper 14-kilometre route from Baltal.
The pilgrimage is scheduled to conclude on August 9. Meanwhile, the Budha Amarnath Yatra from Jammu has also commenced, with over a thousand pilgrims flagged off by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on July 27.
