In
an interesting development around the Gyanvapi mosque case, the Allahabad HC
granted the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to survey the complex of the
mosque.
The
Gyanvapi mosque, situated in Varanasi, a southeastern part of UP, has been
subjected to a lot of debates in the past, and it continues to be in the
limelight as an outcome seems a distant thing at the moment.
However, Allahabad HC's decision to dismiss the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee's plea against the survey and granting the ASI to examine the Gyanvapi mosque could unfold new horizons to the debate.
Notably,
the Varanasi District Court gave the green signal to the ASI for the survey on
July 21, only to be opposed by the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee.
Adjacent
to the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi, it is not the first time that a
lawsuit has been filed related to the Gyanvapi mosque. In 1991, a Hindu priest
filed a petition to get access to the mosque in order to pray, as he believed
that the mosque was built upon a Hindu temple.
He further wanted the handover of the mosque to Hindus. However, it was fruitless, and the case was dismissed 7 years later.
ecently
in 2019, a similar petition was filed related to the "originality" of
the Gyanvapi mosque. The petition sought a thorough survey of the Gyanvapi
mosque area to determine the true history of the site.
Many
historians believe that the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi was built upon a temple.
Renowned historian Satish Chandra believes that the Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb,
destroyed a Hindu temple and built the mosque during his reign as a means of
punishment to the Hindus.
While
the real history remains a myth to date with no concrete evidence, a genuine
examination of the Gyanvapi mosque with state-of-the-art tools and techniques
can settle the long-standing debate once and for all.
