Golfer Aditi Ashok faced a turbulent day but
managed to secure a historic silver medal for India at the Asian Games 2023.
She had entered the final round with a commanding 7-shot lead, poised for a
gold medal, but her fortunes took an unexpected turn. Aditi finished the
tournament at -17, a score that etched her name in Indian sporting history as
the first woman golfer to win a medal at the Asian Games.
Aditi's journey on the golf course was
anything but smooth. On the 7th hole, a missed birdie opportunity added to the
drama, but she saved par with a tap-in. A bogey on the sixth hole further
narrowed her lead to just five strokes over Thailand's Arpichuya Yubol.
However, she found her rhythm and closed the front nine with a birdie on the
ninth hole.
As the round progressed, Yubol gained
momentum, posting a two-under score on the back nine and closing the gap to
just four strokes. Aditi maintained a three-stroke lead through the 12th hole,
but Yubol was relentless in her pursuit. On the 13th hole, Yubol showcased her
skills with a birdie, reducing Aditi's lead to just two strokes with five holes
to go.
The 14th hole saw opportunities for both
players, but neither managed to capitalize on them. Aditi missed an easy putt,
settling for par, while Yubol narrowly missed a birdie putt. Aditi's lead
remained at two strokes. However, the pressure intensified as the gold medal
slipped away.
Aditi's struggles continued on the 16th hole,
where she suffered a challenging double bogey, dropping her to second place.
With just two holes remaining, Aditi needed a remarkable performance to regain
the top spot. Meanwhile, Lin from China and South Korea's Hyunjo Yoo were
closing in, and Aditi's chances of a medal were hanging by a thread.
On the final hole, Aditi faced further
challenges as her drive ended up in the rough. However, she displayed
resilience, avoiding a bogey and securing a second-place finish. Yubol claimed
the gold medal, while Aditi's historic silver medal brought pride to India in
the world of golf.
