In
a retaliatory strike by the US
military in Baghdad, an Iran-backed militia leader accused of attacking US
personnel was killed. The Pentagon confirmed the strike targeted Mushtaq Jawad
Kazim al Jawari, a leader of Harakat al Nujaba, responsible for planning
assaults against US forces in Iraq. This action, authorized by Prime Minister
Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, drew condemnation from the Iraqi government, calling
it an unjustified attack on Iraqi security forces.
Pentagon
spokesperson Pat Ryder stated that the strike occurred at 9 am GMT, resulting
in the death of Mushtaq Jawad Kazim al Jawari and another Harakat al Nujaba
member. Ryder emphasized that no civilians or infrastructure were harmed during
the operation.
The
US military has faced over 100 attacks in Iraq and Syria following the
Israel-Hamas conflict in October, primarily through missile strikes and one-way
attack drones. With troops stationed in Iraq and Syria, the US aims to prevent
the resurgence of Islamic State militants.
Reports earlier suggested a drone attack on the Nujaba militia's headquarters in eastern Baghdad, resulting in the deaths of four individuals, including a militia commander and an aide. Ryder clarified that the individual targeted in the US strike was a leader of an Iranian proxy group responsible for attacks on US personnel, dismissing claims of striking Iraqi security forces.

Following
the strike, Iraqi militia commanders vowed retaliation against the US. Abu
Aqeel al-Moussawi, a local militia commander, pledged to make the Americans
regret their aggression. Notably, Prime Minister Sudani maintains limited
control over Iran-backed forces, crucial for his ascent to power.
Iran-aligned
militia groups in Iraq and Syria oppose Israel's actions in Gaza and hold the
US partially accountable. Additionally, Iran-backed Houthi rebels have
protested against Israel and disrupted international shipping by attacking
commercial vessels in the Red Sea.
Previously, the US embassy in Iraq faced a multi-mortar attack allegedly by an Iran-backed militia. Although no injuries occurred, the attack signified ongoing threats to US interests in Iraq amid support for Israel. Despite denials of responsibility, militant groups affirm their commitment to operations until perceived injustices cease.
