Bihar faces a severe flood crisis affecting over 1.6 million people due to heavy rainfall causing river overflow. The government has deployed disaster management teams as the IMD issues a ‘yellow’ alert for continued heavy rain across the state.
The flood situation in Bihar has deteriorated significantly, impacting over 1.6 million people as heavy rainfall causes major rivers to overflow. Authorities reported that the Kosi and Bagmati rivers breached their embankments in Darbhanga and Sitamarhi districts, respectively, exacerbating the flood crisis in the state.
Rising water levels have prompted the state government to issue flood alerts. The Kosi River overflowed near Kartarpur, submerging nearby villages, while seepage from the Bagmati River was noted in Runni Saidpur. Despite these challenges, Bihar's water resources minister, Vijay Kumar Choudhary, stated that the situation remains manageable, assuring residents there is no cause for panic.
So far, six instances of embankment breaches have been recorded, with repair efforts underway for several affected areas. While the water levels in some rivers have begun to recede, parts of Valmikinagar and Kiratpur continue to experience high water flow. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported in connection with the flooding.
In addition to the flooding, power disruptions have occurred, particularly affecting 45,000 homes in Muzaffarpur due to floodwaters entering the Katra Bakuchi power grid. Efforts to restore electricity are contingent upon the water level decreasing.

As the situation worsens, the state disaster management department has mobilized additional teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and state disaster authorities from neighboring Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a ‘yellow’ alert, predicting further heavy rainfall across several districts in Bihar.
