Violence in west Bengal

A 4-member fact- finding committee had been set up by the BJP in lieu of the recent violence during panchayat polls in West Bengal. The fact-finding committee made its first visit to different parts of the state yesterday. The members include BJP MPsRavishankar Prasad, Dr Satyapal Singh, Dr Rajeep Roy and Rekha Verma.

Social Conditions

Multiple women pleaded before members of the fact-finding committee to rescue them from their own residence. A group of women alleged that members of the TMC would break into their houses during every poll, subject them to violence and destroy their homes. They would be left wounded in the wreckage. They said that the reason behind such violent face-offs was that the women had been ardent supporters of the BJP for years.

A 11 year old boy too walked up to the fact finding committed showing a deep wound on his arm that was treated with 7 stitches. He said that TMC workers hit him with a brick when he tried to save his mother who was walking towards the poll booth during the panchayat poll.

The Way Ahead

The West Bengal panchayat polls have presented the worst form of the state. The situation in West Bengal is not what the definition of democracy contemplates. It calls for elaborate actions to be taken at the earliest possible opportunity.
