Halifax Regional Police have determined there was no foul play in the death of 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur, an Indian-origin Walmart employee whose body was discovered in the store’s bakery department walk-in oven last month. Kaur, a Sikh teen from India, was found unresponsive at the Walmart on Mumford Road, Halifax, on October 19.

The investigation included interviews, video footage reviews, and collaboration with Nova Scotia’s Department of Labor and medical examiners. Police spokesperson Martin Cromwell confirmed that the death was “not suspicious” and stated that no one else was involved in the circumstances surrounding her demise.

Kaur’s death drew attention online, with TikTok users speculating about the oven's mechanics, which they claimed made accidental entrapment unlikely. However, police dismissed these theories, citing no evidence of foul play.

Kaur’s mother, who also worked at the store, discovered her daughter after not seeing her for an hour. The tragedy prompted a workplace safety investigation. Nova Scotia’s Department of Labour issued a stop-work order on the bakery oven shortly after the incident. The order was lifted after confirming the oven was functioning according to manufacturer standards.

Walmart has since announced the removal of the bakery oven as part of a nationwide remodel. The Department of Labour has now assumed the lead in ongoing workplace safety evaluations.
