The Indian Medical Association has demanded stronger security measures after Dr. Balaji Jaganathan was brutally stabbed by a patient's son in Chennai. The IMA urged for stricter legislation, while CM MK Stalin assured that all necessary steps will be taken to protect healthcare workers in Tamil Nadu.
Following a violent assault on Dr. Balaji Jaganathan at Chennai’s Kalaignar Centenary Hospital, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has issued a stern appeal for improved security in healthcare settings across India. The attack involved Vignesh, who allegedly felt his mother’s treatment was inadequate, and subsequently stabbed Dr. Jaganathan seven times, inflicting injuries to his neck, ear, forehead, back, and stomach. The doctor is currently in the ICU.
The IMA condemned the incident, describing it as part of an “ever-recurring violence” against medical professionals, and emphasized the need for legislation that would impose stringent penalties and proactive safety protocols to safeguard doctors. The association criticized the existing approach, describing it as superficial and insufficient to make healthcare workers feel safe. The statement declared that only a comprehensive overhaul of hospital security can restore doctors’ confidence and allow them to work without fear.
The Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, responded with a commitment to preventing similar attacks in the future. Stalin ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, asserting that the welfare and protection of doctors are paramount as they tirelessly serve the public. The suspect, Vignesh, was apprehended after attempting to flee the hospital scene and has been placed under police custody.
