Congress Reveals "Ghotala Sheet" Alleging 254 Scams During 18-Year BJP Rule in Madhya Pradesh
Congress on Friday released a document named the "Ghotala sheet" wherein the former accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of 254 scams during the 18-year rule in Madhya Pradesh.
These cases encompass notable instances like the Vyapam scandal amounting to ₹2,000 crore, illicit mining worth ₹50,000 crore, a ₹3,000 crore e-tender fraud, a ₹25,000 crore RTO scam, an ₹86,000 crore liquor scandal, a ₹100 crore Mahakal Lok scam, and a massive ₹94,000 crore electricity fraud.
At a press briefing, Kamal Nath, the state Congress chief and former chief minister, underscored that the BJP administration, led by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, had earned notoriety for unabated corruption.
Nath coined the term "Ghotala state" to describe the rampant scandals that he believes have come to define the region. Playfully, he suggested that an online search for the term "scam" would soon feature Chief Minister Chouhan's visage.
Facing queries about his prior administration's perceived inaction against these alleged irregularities, Nath defended his tenure by emphasising his dedication to fostering Madhya Pradesh as an investment magnet during his 15-month tenure. He noted that a significant portion of this time was restricted due to the model code of conduct in place for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
As part of their anti-corruption campaign, the Congress distributed leaflets bearing the tagline "Ghotala hi Ghotala, Ghotala Seth – 50 per cent Commission Rate." They also made available a contact number for those wishing to align themselves with the movement against the BJP's purported corrupt practices.
In response, Madhya Pradesh BJP president Vishnu Dutt Sharma dubbed Kamal Nath as "Corruption Nath," drawing attention to Nath's previous associations with controversies rather than the "2023 model" he claims to embody. The pamphlet circulated by the Congress, however, lacked proper accreditation.
With the year-end assembly elections looming, preparations are underway for a political showdown. Despite the absence of an official election schedule, the BJP unveiled its initial candidate list on Thursday, setting the stage for a fierce electoral clash centred around allegations of corruption and governance efficiency.
