External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, addressing concerns in the Lok Sabha, emphasized that the protection of all Bangladeshi citizens, including minorities, lies with the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government. His statement comes amidst reports of escalating violence against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh since August 2024, following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Jaishankar highlighted attacks on temples and puja mandaps, particularly during the recent Durga Puja celebrations. He assured that the Indian government has expressed its concerns to Dhaka, with the High Commission of India closely monitoring the situation.

The issue has garnered attention amid protests over the arrest of ISKCON priest Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari on sedition charges. He was accused of hoisting a saffron flag above the Bangladesh national flag during a rally. Das’s arrest has sparked outrage, with opposition leaders urging India’s central government to intervene.

Sheikh Hasina, now in exile, has publicly condemned the arrest, calling it unjust and advocating for Das's immediate release. She has also urged the Bangladesh government to prioritize the safety of its religious and ethnic minorities.

Jaishankar reiterated that safeguarding minority rights is a key responsibility of the Bangladeshi government and assured the Lok Sabha of continued diplomatic engagement to address the situation. This development underscores the fragile state of interfaith relations in Bangladesh and highlights India’s commitment to regional stability and human rights.
