In violation of the 2013 ban, 737 lambs and goats were seized at the Mylapura Mailaralingeshwara fair in Yadgir, Karnataka. Devotees attempted to smuggle animals to toss at the deity’s palanquin, believing it would bring prosperity. The confiscated livestock will be auctioned, with the funds directed towards Mylapura's development. Despite awareness efforts, the tradition persists.

The Yadgir district administration seized 737 lambs and goats brought to the Mylapura Mailaralingeshwara fair on January 13-15, 2025, despite the longstanding ban on tossing animals at the deity’s palanquin. The tradition, which devotees believe brings prosperity, was prohibited in 2013 due to concerns over animal cruelty.

Officials set up checkposts to monitor the fair and prevent the smuggling of livestock. However, some devotees attempted to conceal the animals in dhotars, blankets, and sarees in order to bypass the ban. The confiscated goats and lambs will be auctioned off, and the proceeds will be allocated for the development of Mylapura.

Yadgir’s additional deputy commissioner, Sharanabasappa Koteppagol, confirmed the seizure and noted that despite awareness campaigns, some continued to flout the regulations.
