Cyclone Dana, expected to impact the Odisha-West Bengal coast by October 24, was named by Saudi Arabia. The name "Dana" is derived from Arabic, meaning "generosity." The cyclone, forming in the Bay of Bengal, is forecasted to intensify and bring heavy rains and high winds to the region.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) oversees the process of naming tropical cyclones, using a rotating list of names submitted by countries in the affected regions. In the case of Cyclone Dana, Saudi Arabia contributed the name as part of its role in the WMO's naming system for the North Indian Ocean.
Naming cyclones makes them easier to identify and communicate, improving awareness and preparedness. The names reflect cultural and regional diversity, promoting cross-border collaboration in dealing with storms. Other recent cyclones include Cyclone Tauktae (named by Myanmar) and Cyclone Nivar (named by Iran).
