Caste-Based Violence Erupts in Tiruch

The incident occurred on Saturday night when S Loganathan (28), P Raja (35), and Baskar (35) reportedly directed casteist slurs at K Anandharaj (32) and his brother K Ashok (33) after being rebuked for urinating in front of the Dalit family's residence.

In an intoxicated state, the accused proceeded to attack the family, including Anandharaj's wife A Munishwari (32). They then contacted another group of about 20 people to join them in vandalising the family's home. Unexpectedly, they also stopped a private bus they knew was passing and rounded up its passengers to assist in the attack.

When police from Pulivalam station arrived, they took the injured to the nearby Thuraiyur government hospital right away. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM] has called for a demonstration in the village of Pulivalam on Wednesday to express its outrage over the tragedy. The CPM was concerned that the First Information Report (FIR) did not include Mohanraj, who they believed to be involved in the attack, and they called for his immediate arrest.

The suspects have been charged under the SC/ST Act, the TNWH, and IPC sections 147 (relating to rioting) and 323 (relating to voluntarily causing hurt). The episode highlights the persistent problems of discrimination and violence based on caste in the country.
