An 18-year-old man unintentionally stepped over a pressure IED (Improvised Explosive Device) planted by Maoists in the forests near Mutvendi village, Bijapur district. The incident resulted in the man losing his life.

The darkest day for the village began on Saturday when the victim – Gadia, who had never been warned – unknowingly triggered the deadly IED trap laid by the outlawed rebels. He died soon after being wounded.

The Bijapur police were informed of the event on Monday, illustrating the difficulty of working in the very remote regions affected by the Maoists. The Superintendent of Police, Jitendra Yadav, in a briefing, announced the disheartening news that Gadia went to a forest nearby on his motorcycle and stepped on a pressure IED (Improvised Explosive Device), dying on the spot.

This latest attack is the most recent and tragic event in the series of Maoist insurgency, which has been ravaging the seven districts of the Bastar region. The insurgents normally make use of IED devices to lay traps on roads and dirt tracks, posing a danger to security forces and civilians in the interior areas.

Interestingly enough, a similar case occurred in the area of Naimed, Bijapur district, just a week ago, where a resident of Kachilwar village of the same district suffered severe injuries from an IED blast.

Usually, Maoist bomb blasts are indiscriminate, leaving untold loss of innocent lives, which has attracted a lot of criticism from the general public. Authorities have promised to speed up operations in protecting people's lives and eliminating the rebel group.

As the place reels from this catastrophe, the calls for Maoists to be decisively fought become intense, underscoring the immediate need for the restoration of peace and security in the region.
