NEP 2020-aligned curriculum

Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, made a significant announcement today regarding the education sector. He unveiled the completion of the new curriculum framework (NCF) aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This development marks a pivotal step in reshaping the educational landscape.

Under the newly formulated NCF, a remarkable change has been introduced to the examination pattern. Board exams will now take place twice a year, offering students the chance to retain their better scores. This change aims to provide students ample opportunities to excel and demonstrate their capabilities. Allowing students to appear for board exams only in subjects they have mastered shifts the focus from quantity to quality.

One of the core principles of the NCF is the shift from rote memorization to a more comprehensive and competency-based assessment approach. The aim is to evaluate students' understanding and ability to apply acquired knowledge. This change reflects a departure from the traditional months of coaching and memorization that often-characterised board exam preparation.

The NCF introduces an intriguing alteration for students in classes 11 and 12. From now on, these students will be required to study two languages, one of which must be an Indian language. This step promotes linguistic diversity and cultural awareness among students. Additionally, the NCF liberates students from the confines of traditional streams, offering them the freedom to choose subjects based on their interests and aspirations.

In a forward-looking move, the NCF envisions the capability of school boards to offer 'on-demand' exams in due course. To maintain the quality of the examination process, the developers and evaluators of board exams will need to complete university-certified courses, enhancing their expertise and understanding of modern educational needs.

The new framework also touches upon classroom practices. The conventional approach of 'covering' classroom textbooks is set to be phased out. Additionally, there is an emphasis on optimising the cost of books, ensuring that students have access to essential learning resources without financial burdens.

These changes are expected to shape a brighter future for students and the education sector.
