The Election Commission of India has rescheduled by-elections in 14 assembly constituencies from November 13 to November 20, 2024, in response to concerns over social and cultural events impacting voter turnout. The elections will coincide with those in Maharashtra and Jharkhand.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially rescheduled the by-elections for 14 assembly constituencies from November 13 to November 20, 2024. This change, announced on Monday, comes in response to requests from various political parties and social organizations. Concerns were raised regarding significant social, cultural, and religious events occurring on the original polling date, which could potentially hinder voter turnout.
The affected constituencies include key regions in Kerala, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh, with some notable areas being Palakkad in Kerala and multiple constituencies in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh, such as Gidderbaha and Ghaziabad. The ECI acknowledged the representations it received from recognized parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Indian National Congress (INC), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), and others. These parties argued that the original date would create logistical challenges and lower voter participation, leading the ECI to consider a more accommodating schedule.
The by-elections will coincide with the assembly elections in Maharashtra and the second phase of polls in Jharkhand, which are also set for November 20. In Maharashtra, the ruling Mahayuti alliance, comprising the BJP, Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar-led NCP, will face off against the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance. The adjustments in polling dates aim to enhance electoral participation and ensure a smoother voting process.
