Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made a significant revelation during the Budget
2024 announcement, focusing on a transformative housing initiative for the
middle class. In her pre-election speech before the Lok
Sabha elections of 2024, Sitharaman detailed a comprehensive plan to
introduce various housing schemes, emphasizing support for slum dwellers and
individuals living on rent.
"Our government is committed to launching a housing scheme that will benefit deserving sections of the middle class, including those residing in rented houses, slums, chawls, and unauthorized colonies. This initiative will enable them to purchase or build their own houses," Sitharaman declared passionately during her budget speech.

Finance Minister also laid out an ambitious target of providing an additional 2
crore houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna - Gramin, supplementing the
ongoing efforts to achieve the existing goal of 3 crore houses under the rural
housing scheme. Sitharaman expressed confidence in nearing the 3 crore target
soon, with the vision of constructing an additional 2 crore houses over the
next five years.
A notable aspect of the Budget 2024 presentation was the adoption of a paperless format. Sitharaman, known for her forward-looking approach, utilized a digital tablet enclosed in a traditional 'bahi-khata' style pouch. This blend of modern technology with cultural symbolism underlines the government's commitment to innovation in governance.
