Mumbai faces severe weather as IMD issues red alert for heavy rains. Police urge residents to stay indoors, flights disrupted. Chief Minister coordinates relief efforts. NDRF deployed and army on standby as city braces for potential flooding.
The India Meteorological Department IMD has put Mumbai under a red alert for heavy rains and poor visibility till 8.30 am today and the mega city is all set to be battered by inclement weather conditions. In response, Mumbai Police have appealed to the populace of the city to avoid going out in the streets unless it is extremely necessary.
This Twitter post by the police advisory encourages safety during this weather event, which took place on social media platform X. Community association has availed 100 and 112 emergency contact numbers for people who require attention.
The effects of the rains are already being realized in the city with flood raging through the city. In the last 24 hours, Mumbai city has received 44 mm of rain while eastern suburbs got 90 mm and western suburbs got 89 mm rain. Due to the deluge, several flights have been affected with eleven of them being cancelled while ten have been forced to land in nearby airports.
The current Chief Minister of Maharashtra is Eknath Shinde, who has assumed the overall responsibility of handling the situation and liaised with other officials to provide help for the affected regions. The National Disaster Response Force [NDRF] and the corresponding state team have been mobilised; the army airborne teams are ready.
The situation in the next city of Pune is not much better: some homes and streets are filled with water. One of the ghats that connects Raigad and Pune, the Tamhini Ghat, has been closed due to a landslide.
