Imran Khan’s nephew, Shershah Khan, has been sent to judicial remand in connection with the Jinnah House attack during the 2023 riots. His arrest, which the defence calls politically motivated, has sparked criticism from human rights groups. The court denied further custody, citing insufficient grounds for continued physical remand.

Shershah Khan, nephew of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, was sent to jail on judicial remand by an anti-terrorism court in Lahore in connection with the Jinnah House attack during the May 2023 riots. Arrested by Lahore Police on August 22, Shershah is the son of Aleema Khan, Imran Khan’s sister.
His brother, Shahrez Khan, was arrested a day earlier on similar charges. Following the end of Shershah’s five-day physical remand, he was presented before Judge Manzer Ali Gill under tight security. The prosecution requested a 30-day remand to further probe his role, while the defence sought his immediate release, arguing there was no evidence against him.
Judge Gill rejected the plea for further physical custody and noted that a photogrammetry test had already been conducted and a wooden baton had been recovered from Shershah. The court concluded that digital evidence could be obtained without the accused’s physical presence and that no grounds remained for additional remand.
Aleema Khan was present in court along with her sisters, and has also filed a bail petition. The defence claimed the arrest was politically motivated, pointing to the lack of prior notice and the absence of solid evidence. A past ruling that discharged PTI leader Dr Yasmin Rashid on similar grounds was submitted in support of the plea.

Amnesty International and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan have criticized the arrests, calling them politically driven. The government, however, has defended its actions, citing the May 9 riots as justification. The unrest began after Imran Khan’s arrest and saw PTI supporters attacking military and state properties, leading to a crackdown on the party and the arrest of numerous leaders and activists.
