In the wake of Islamist rebels seizing control of Damascus and overthrowing President Bashar al-Assad, India has urged all stakeholders to prioritize Syria's unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. This development marks a significant shift in Syria's political landscape, ending decades of Assad's rule.

On Monday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement expressing concern and emphasizing the importance of a peaceful, inclusive Syrian-led political process. “We advocate a political solution that respects the interests and aspirations of all sections of Syrian society,” the statement read. The MEA also assured that the Indian Embassy in Damascus remains in contact with the Indian community in Syria, monitoring their safety and security amidst the turmoil.

The situation has drawn international attention, with China also calling for a diplomatic resolution. Beijing’s foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning urged all relevant parties to prioritize the Syrian people's fundamental interests and expedite a peaceful resolution.

The rebel victory in Damascus, marked by significant unrest and damage, including the destruction of a statue of former Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, has left the nation at a critical juncture. Global powers are closely observing the developments, stressing the importance of dialogue and collaboration to stabilize the region.
