Chandrayaan-3, India's third lunar mission

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced the launch date for Chandrayaan-3, India's third lunar mission. Scheduled for July 13 at 2:30 pm local time.

This mission marks another significant stride in India's space exploration endeavors. Building upon the lessons learned from the previous mission, Chandrayaan-3 aims to achieve a successful soft landing on the lunar surface and operate a robotic rover, following the bittersweet outcome of Chandrayaan-2 in 2019.

The forthcoming Chandrayaan-3 mission is expected to deepen our understanding of the moon and unlock valuable insights. The primary objective is to demonstrate the capability of landing softly on the lunar terrain and effectively operating a rover. While the previous mission witnessed a setback with the Vikram lander's hard landing, ISRO officials remain optimistic about the upcoming mission's prospects.

The Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota will serve as the launch site for Chandrayaan-3. The mission will utilize the GSLV Mark 3 heavy-lift launch vehicle, with a budget of Rs 615 crore allocated to its execution. Extensive testing and validation processes have been undertaken to mitigate risks and enhance the mission's chances of success. Based on the lessons from Chandrayaan-2, the mission design, including the configuration of lunar payloads, has been meticulously optimized.

To ensure a higher likelihood of success, ISRO has implemented significant measures for Chandrayaan-3. Similar to Chandrayaan-2, the mission comprises a lander and a rover, while omitting an orbiter. A propulsion module, functioning as a communications relay satellite, will transport the lander and rover until the spacecraft reaches a 100 km lunar orbit.

Notably, the inclusion of the Spectro-polarimetry of Habitable Planet Earth (SHAPE) payload represents a substantial addition to the mission. This equipment will conduct spectral and polarimetric measurements of Earth from lunar orbit, providing scientists with invaluable data about our home planet.

The Chandrayaan-3 has undergone rigorous testing and validation processes.

ISRO has outlined three primary objectives for the Chandrayaan-3 mission: achieving a safe and gentle landing on the moon, demonstrating the rover's capabilities on the lunar surface, and conducting in-situ scientific observations. The mission also seeks to investigate the chemical composition, natural elements, soil, and water present on the lunar surface, ultimately enhancing our understanding of the moon's composition.

With the launch date fast approaching, anticipation is growing for India's Chandrayaan-3 mission. The country's ambitious lunar exploration efforts continue to propel them forward in the realm of space exploration, fostering scientific advancements and expanding humanity's knowledge of the celestial bodies beyond our planet.
