Indian envoy extends legal support to eight Navy veterans condemned to death in Qatar, revealed the Ministry of External Affairs. The situation is under Indian scrutiny, offering full legal assistance to the accused. The MEA spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, outlined the ongoing legal processes and the consular support provided to the prisoners.

"There have been two hearings in the case, with appeals lodged by the families of the detainees. The defendants exhausted their final appeal. We're closely monitoring and providing all necessary legal and consular aid. Our ambassador secured consular access, meeting all eight inmates on December 3," stated Bagchi, emphasizing the sensitivity of the situation while assuring continued support and transparency.

Addressing the broader context, Bagchi highlighted Prime Minister Modi's recent meeting with Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad, the Amir of Qatar, during CoP28 in Dubai. Discussions encompassed bilateral relations and the well-being of the Indian community. The announcement of the death penalty for the eight Indian nationals was made by a Qatar court on October 26. An appeal against this sentence has been filed and is now being reviewed by a higher court in Qatar.

India's commitment to supporting its citizens facing legal challenges in foreign countries, especially in critical cases like this, remains steadfast. The continuous updates and diplomatic engagements reflect India's dedication to ensuring fair treatment and justice for its citizens abroad.
