wrestlers' protest

Indian wrestlers who have been protesting against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, have decided to shift their battle from the streets to the courtroom.

Prominent grapplers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia simultaneously posted a tweet stating that the government had kept its promise by filing a chargesheet against Singh. They emphasized their commitment to seeking justice but clarified that they would pursue legal avenues rather than continue their protest on the roads.

The wrestlers also mentioned the ongoing reform process within the WFI and expressed their expectation for the government to fulfill its promises regarding the upcoming WFI elections on July 11.

Vinesh and Sakshi announced their intention to take a temporary break from social media. In a previous live address, the trio had criticized former wrestler and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Yogeshwar Dutt for questioning their exemption from the Asian Games trials, granted by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) ad-hoc panel.

During their address, the wrestlers made it clear that their fight against Singh would persist, and they planned to assess the chargesheet filed against him to determine their future course of action. Vinesh specifically alleged that Dutt was targeting them due to personal interests, insinuating that he may have been offered the position of WFI President by Singh.

The wrestlers acknowledged that the government has fulfilled its promise of filing a chargesheet against Brij Bhushan Singh.

The wrestlers' protest, which garnered significant support from farmer leaders, khap panchayats, and various organizations, spanned 38 days at Jantar Mantar. However, they temporarily suspended their protest on May 28, after receiving assurances from Sports Minister Anurag Thakur that a chargesheet would be filed against Singh by June 15 and that his family members would be barred from contesting the WFI elections.

Despite this pause, the wrestlers reiterated that their pursuit of justice was far from over and would continue until Singh faced the consequences of his actions.
