ISKCON on Wednesday refuted all
the allegations by BJP MP Maneka Gandhi, who accused the latter of being
involved in selling cows to slaughterhouses.
ISKCON firmly stated that these
claims are both "unsubstantiated and false" expressing its surprise
at the former Union Minister's remarks.
In an official statement,
Yudhistir Govinda Das, ISKCON's national spokesperson, pointed out that ISKCON
has taken the lead in the preservation of cows in various parts of the world
where beef holds an important place in the diet.
"Many of the cows presently
served in ISKCON's goshalas were brought to us after being abandoned, injured,
or rescued from being slaughtered,” he said.
The statement further mentioned,” Within India, ISKCON runs more than 60 Goshalas protecting hundreds of sacred cows and bulls and providing personalized care for their entire lifetime.”
Subsequently, ISKCON's Public
Relations Officer (PRO), Radharaman Das, released a video condemning Maneka
Gandhi's comments and called for evidence to substantiate her claims.
In addition, the ISKCON PRO
insisted that Maneka Gandhi had not made a visit to the Anantapur Gaushala, as
stated by the Gaushala staff, who had no knowledge of her presence.
Moreover, the ISKCON PRO
challenged Gandhi to produce a video showcasing the Gaushala she alleges is in
a distressing state.
The controversy initially began when a video of Maneka Gandhi launching a scathing attack on ISKCON gained widespread public attention.
The former Union Minister and
animal rights activist remarked, "ISKCON establishes gaushalas and earns
unlimited benefits for the same from the government, in the form of huge
lands."
In the video, she revealed,
"I recently visited their Anantapur Gaushala (in Andhra Pradesh) and did
not find even a single cow in good condition there. There were no calves in the
Gaushala, which means all of them were sold off."
Maneka Gandi not only called ISKCON the "biggest cheat
in the country” but also alleged that “it sells cows from its gaushalas
(cowsheds) to the butchers."
