Adding fuel to the ongoing controversy surrounding ISKCON, the Kolkata branch of the organisation on Friday filed a defamation lawsuit amounting to Rs 100 crore against BJP leader Maneka Gandhi.
A few days ago, the Member of Parliament from Sultanpur had allegedly remarked, "ISKCON sells cows from its Gaushalas (cowsheds) to butchers."
During an interview with ANI, Radharamn Das, Vice-President of ISKCON Kolkata, expressed, "The comments of Maneka Gandhi were very unfortunate. Our devotees across the world are very hurt."
He informed, "We are taking legal action of defamation of Rs 100 crores against her. We have sent her a notice today."
The situation escalated in response to a viral video featuring Maneka Gandhi, the founder of People for Animals.
In this video, she was recorded alleging, "ISKCON establishes gaushalas and earns unlimited benefits for the same from the government, in the form of huge lands."
The MP further revealed in the video, "I recently visited their Anantapur Gaushala (in Andhra Pradesh) and did not find even a single cow in good condition there. There were no calves in the Gaushala, which means all of them were sold off."
This statement triggered the legal action taken by ISKCON against her.
In response to these allegations, Das remarked, "How can an MP, once a Union Minister, say a lie against such a big society without any evidence?"
He further informed, "She is saying (in the purported video) that she visited our Anantpur Gaushala but our bhakts (ISKCON members) there do not remember the visit."
