Jayant Patil, NCP(SP) leader and former Maharashtra Minister, leads narrowly in Islampur. Renowned for his economic reforms and modernizing initiatives like Force 1, he remains a significant figure in state politics. With Sharad Pawar’s backing, Patil is poised for a potential larger role in Maharashtra’s governance.
Jayant Patil, a key leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction), is leading the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly election from Islampur with a narrow margin of 691 votes. Known for his extensive political career, Patil has represented the Islampur constituency since 2009 and has held several significant portfolios, including Finance, Rural Development, and Home Minister.
A civil engineer by education, Patil began his political journey in 1990 as a Congress candidate from Walwa in Sangli, later joining the NCP in 1999. At 39, he became Maharashtra's youngest Finance Minister, a position he held for a decade. During his tenure, Patil presented the state budget ten consecutive times, implemented economic reforms, and introduced key initiatives like E-Panchayats and E-banking for rural development.
Patil's contributions as Home Minister include modernizing the Maharashtra Police and establishing the Force 1 anti-terrorism unit after the 2008 Mumbai attacks. His focus on women, farmers, and below-poverty-line citizens has earned him a reputation for inclusive governance.
