The autopsy of a 28-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor from Kolkata has confirmed that she was sexually assaulted and murdered, ruling out initial speculations of suicide. The victim, a second-year student in the respiratory medicine department at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was found partially clothed in the seminar hall of the hospital's emergency building on Friday morning.

The harrowing details of the autopsy reveal multiple injuries, including bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and genital area. The report further states that the victim suffered injuries to her face, neck, belly, and limbs. Notably, her neck bone was found broken, leading investigators to believe that she was strangled before being smothered to death.

The crime is believed to have occurred between 3 and 6 AM, shortly after the victim had dinner with her juniors and went to rest in the seminar room due to the lack of a separate on-call room. The Kolkata Police have established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident, with members from the homicide department and other specialized units leading the investigation. Five individuals who were on duty with the victim that night have already been questioned.

The brutal nature of the crime has led to widespread protests among medical students, who have halted work in all departments except the emergency ward, demanding immediate justice. Political leaders have also voiced their concerns, with BJP's Suvendu Adhikari calling for a CBI investigation into the case, criticizing the state government's response.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has assured the victim's family that appropriate action will be taken against those responsible. The ruling Trinamool Congress has emphasized the importance of a fair and transparent investigation.
