The Supreme Court on Monday directed junior doctors in West Bengal to resume their duties by 5 p.m. on September 10. The order comes amid ongoing protests demanding justice for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Despite the Supreme Court’s directive, the doctors have decided to continue their ‘cease work’ strike, citing unresolved demands and dissatisfaction with the progress of the investigation.

The protests, led by junior doctors, were further fueled by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Bengal branch, which expressed deep disappointment with the court's decision. The IMA criticized both the state government and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), accusing them of failing to ensure justice for the deceased trainee doctor. They also condemned the alleged health syndicate that continues to plague the state's medical system.

In response to the strike, large gatherings took place across Kolkata and neighboring towns as part of a campaign called ‘9-9-9’. Citizens gathered for nine minutes at 9 p.m. at key locations, including Shyambazar and Esplanade, to demand justice for the murdered doctor. Protesting doctors have also planned a rally to Swasthya Bhavan, West Bengal's health department headquarters, demanding the resignation of the state's health secretary and director of health education.

While the Trinamool Congress government has hailed the court's directive, urging doctors to prioritize their duty to save lives, the doctors remain steadfast in their protests until justice is served for their colleague. The victim’s mother has also accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of lying about offering financial compensation, further deepening the controversy.
