Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain died at 73 from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a chronic lung disease causing scarring and breathing difficulties. Renowned tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain passed away in San Francisco at 73 due to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a severe chronic lung disease. Known for redefining Indian classical music on a global stage, Hussain’s death has drawn attention to the challenges posed by IPF, a condition without a definitive cure.

IPF is characterized by progressive scarring of lung tissues, which thickens the walls of alveoli, impairing oxygen transfer to the bloodstream. The condition, often linked to factors such as smoking, age, and genetic predisposition, leaves patients grappling with persistent shortness of breath, chronic dry cough, fatigue, and unintentional weight loss.

Scientists believe genetic mutations, particularly in genes like MUC5B, which regulates mucus production in the lungs, increase susceptibility to IPF. Though the exact cause remains unknown, the disease is thought to result from repeated cycles of lung tissue damage and incomplete healing.

Despite the absence of a cure, treatments aim to slow disease progression. Medications like Nintedanib and Pirfenidone help maintain lung function, while oxygen therapy and lifestyle adjustments, such as quitting smoking and managing stress, can improve quality of life. For severe cases, lung transplants may be an option, albeit with significant risks.
