Maharashtra declared a day of mourning for Ratan Tata, the iconic industrialist who passed away at 86. The state canceled all government events, with flags flown at half-mast. His funeral will take place in Mumbai, where tributes are being paid to honor his legacy.
Following the passing of industrialist Ratan Tata at the age of 86, the Maharashtra government declared Thursday, October 10, as a day of mourning. Tata, who was instrumental in transforming the Tata Group into a global powerhouse, passed away in Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed deep sorrow over Tata’s death, calling him a “Kohinoor of India” and praising his contributions to both industry and society.
As a mark of respect, all national flags in government offices will be flown at half-mast, and all government events across the state have been canceled for the day. Maharashtra Minister Deepak Kesarkar, after visiting the hospital, confirmed the cancellation of state programs in Mumbai.
Ratan Tata’s mortal remains will be kept at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai for the public to pay their respects before the final rites are performed in Worli later today. The Mumbai police have made special arrangements for the funeral.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described Tata's death as a significant loss for the nation, highlighting his contributions beyond industry. Fadnavis praised Tata for creating a global brand and establishing a legacy through his philanthropy, which has had a lasting impact on India’s social and economic landscape.
