West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has accused opposition parties of orchestrating the recent attack on Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital. The incident occurred during protests over a junior doctor's rape and murder. Banerjee specifically named BJP and Left parties, adding a political dimension to the ongoing healthcare crisis in the state.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has alleged that "certain political parties" were behind the recent vandalism at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The incident occurred amidst ongoing protests by doctors over the August 9 rape and murder of a junior doctor at the facility.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Banerjee stated, "Police are looking into the matter. I don't have any complaints against the students or the agitating doctors. But there are certain political parties trying to foment trouble." She urged the public to review video footage of the incident for clarity.
According to India Today, Banerjee specifically named the opposition BJP and Left parties as orchestrators of the violence. She claimed to have seen their flags during the attack and criticized their methods, stating, "We have done a lot of aandolan (agitation) and never done things like that inside a hospital."
The Chief Minister's comments come in the wake of a midnight attack on the hospital, which coincided with 'Reclaim the Night' protests across West Bengal against the trainee medic's rape and murder. Banerjee had previously accused the opposition of attempting to "capture power" in the state by organizing "Bangladesh-like protests" in relation to the RG Kar Hospital case.
The case is currently under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), following a directive from the Calcutta High Court to take over from the Kolkata Police.

As tensions continue to escalate, Banerjee's accusations add a political dimension to the ongoing crisis, potentially complicating efforts to resolve the situation and address the concerns of protesting healthcare workers.
