A man set himself on fire inside Almaty International Airport after arguing with his wife over a phone call. The incident followed a missed train and failed attempt to board a flight. He is in critical condition as an investigation into the security lapse begins.
A man set himself on fire at Almaty International Airport in Kazakhstan after a heated argument with his wife over a phone call. The shocking incident occurred on the evening of August 25 and was caught on video, which quickly spread across social media.
According to local reports, the man, believed to be under the influence of alcohol, had missed his last train home. In desperation, he entered a travel agency office inside the airport, asking staff to help him get on a flight. He also requested to use a phone to call his wife. Witnesses say the phone conversation soon turned into a loud argument.
After asking the staff to leave the room, the man poured gasoline over himself and set himself on fire. Video footage shows him suddenly engulfed in flames and stumbling toward nearby airport personnel, who attempted to extinguish the fire.
Emergency services arrived promptly, and the man was transported to a nearby hospital. Authorities stated that he is in extremely critical condition and receiving intensive treatment according to the Ministry of Healthcare’s protocols.
The director of the travel agency confirmed that the man had not made any demands regarding ticket changes and was unknown to their staff. She praised the quick response of the employee who managed to leave the office safely before the man ignited himself.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, including how the man managed to bring gasoline into the airport. The event has raised serious concerns about airport security and passenger mental health.
