In a shocking revelation that has rocked India, it has come to light that a significant 53 percent of institutions participating in the government's minority scholarship initiative have been identified as 'counterfeit,' according to various media reports.
These startling findings emerged from an internal probe conducted by the Ministry of Minority Affairs and are being labelled as the 'most extensive minority scholarship scam' in the nation's history.
The ministry's investigation has exposed pervasive corruption within 830 such institutions, resulting in an estimated financial fraud exceeding 17 million US dollars (approximately Rs 144.83 crore), as per India Today's report.
The report further said that taking the cognisance of the same, Union Minister Smriti Irani has acted swiftly, referring the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further examination.
According to official records, the Ministry of Minority Affairs officially registered a complaint on July 10th, triggering an exhaustive internal investigation spanning 100 districts across 34 states. This comprehensive inquiry closely scrutinised a total of 1572 institutions, revealing a disconcerting degree of fraudulent activity.
In response to these startling revelations, authorities have taken decisive measures, including freezing the bank accounts of all 830 implicated institutions. India Today has also reported that the ministry is demanding explanations from financial institutions as to how these accounts were authorised in the first place.
This scandal not only exposes a gross misappropriation of public funds but also casts a shadow on the government's efforts to empower minority communities through educational scholarships. As the CBI takes the lead in this investigation, questions arise regarding how such an extensive fraud remained concealed for an extended period, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced scrutiny and transparency within India's scholarship programs.
