Massive Protests in Kolkata by Junior Doctors, Medical Students Over Rape-Murder Case on Mahalaya

Thousands protested in Kolkata on Mahalaya, demanding justice for a trainee doctor who was raped and murdered in August. The protests, led by junior doctors, called for increased safety measures at hospitals, and the protestors vowed not to return to work until their demands are met.

Thousands of junior doctors, nurses, medical students, and concerned citizens gathered in Kolkata on Mahalaya to protest the lack of government action following the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Organized by the Bengal Junior Doctors' Front, the protest march began at College Street and ended at Esplanade, with participants holding placards and chanting slogans demanding justice.

The protests stem from frustration over the West Bengal government's inaction on improving safety measures for healthcare workers. The protesting doctors have refused to return to work until their demands for better security and justice for the victim are met. Key demands include the installation of CCTV cameras, 24/7 security at hospitals, and stricter measures to prevent violence against medical staff.

Protesters chose Mahalaya, a significant day that marks the beginning of Durga Puja, to send a strong message. While this day typically celebrates the invocation of Goddess Durga, this year, the celebratory spirit has been overshadowed by the horrific crime.

One protester stated, "We are not in a 'Puja' or 'Utsav' mood. We will continue protesting until justice is served." After the rally, participants gathered by the Ganga River and lit 1,000 diyas in a symbolic gesture of their fight for justice.

Though doctors briefly resumed work in September after reaching an agreement with the government, they renewed their protest on Tuesday, citing unfulfilled promises. Protest leader Aniket Mahato condemned the government's "hollow" promises, declaring that they would not return to work until concrete safety measures are implemented.

A statue named "Abhaya" was unveiled at RG Kar Hospital, representing the victim's struggle and the ongoing protests for justice.
