Nitin Gadkari:-

Union Minister, Nitin Gadkari has said that India has the potential to become the number one EV manufacturer if it uses the lithium reserve in J&K. He made this statement while speaking at an event arranged by the Confederation of Indian Industry(CII).

Gadkari on Lithium

The Road, Transport, and Highway minister said, "Every year, we import 1,200 tonnes of lithium. Now, in Jammu and Kashmir, we got lithium. (If) we can use this lithium ion, we will be the number one automobile manufacturing country in the world". Electric vehicles heavily rely on the use of lithium since it is required to produce batteries that serve as a power source. Lithium is also useful in the manufacturing of solar panels.

The Geological Survey of India (GSI) has discovered around a 5.9-million-tonne reserve of lithium in the district of Resai, Jammu and Kashmir. J&K mining secretary Amit Sharma told PTI, "Lithium falls in the critical resource category, which was not earlier available in India and we were dependent for its 100 per cent import. The G3 (advanced) study of the GSI shows the presence of best quality lithium in abundant quantity in the foothills of Mata Vaishno Devi shrine at Salal village (Reasi)”.

Other Significant Remarks

As per the minister’s statement, the present worth of India's automobile industry is INR 7.5 lakh crore. He mentioned that the sector has the maximum contribution towards the overall GST revenue. "With our innovative approach, we can develop the backward area, increase the growth and at the same time create employment potential.”, Gadkari advised. He emphasized the need to boost the usage of public transport while highlighting that electric buses are the future.
