Odisha Police Issues Stern Warning Against Communal Narratives about Tragic Train Accident

The Odisha Police has issued a warning stating that strict legal action will be taken against individuals who attempt to give a "communal color" to the Balasore train accident. The accident, which occurred on Friday evening, has resulted in the loss of over 280 lives. The police have urged people to refrain from spreading false and malicious posts, emphasizing that an investigation by the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Odisha is currently underway to determine the cause and other aspects of the accident.

 

In response to social media handles mischievously attributing a communal angle to the tragic train accident in Balasore, the Odisha Police tweeted a message expressing their disappointment. They appealed to all concerned individuals to avoid circulating such false and ill-intentioned posts, warning that severe legal action would be initiated against those who spread rumors and attempt to create communal disharmony.

 

Despite the police appeal, images and videos of the Odisha train accident continue to circulate on social media. Some users have tried to give the incident a communal twist by claiming that a mosque was situated near the accident site. However, fact-checking websites have refuted these claims, clarifying that the building highlighted in the viral posts is actually an ISKCON temple, not a mosque.

 

Railway officials have stated that the derailment occurred due to an error in the electronic signaling system, which caused a train to switch tracks incorrectly and collide with a freight train.

 

According to preliminary investigations, a signal initially directed the Coromandel Express to run on the main track, but the signal later changed, leading the train to enter a different track where it collided with the freight train. The impact caused the coaches of the Coromandel Express to overturn onto another track, resulting in the derailment of the incoming Yesvantpur-Howrah Express from the opposite direction.
