In South Africa's Johannesburg central business district, a tragic incident occurred as an underground gas explosion claimed one life and left 41 others injured on Wednesday night. Dr. Mgcinni Tshwaku, the MMC for Public Safety in Johannesburg, was present at the scene when the explosion struck. Emergency services quickly responded to assess the situation and determine the cause and extent of the damage.


Robert Mulaudzi, the spokesperson for the City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services, confirmed that one fatality was recovered, while the injured were given immediate medical attention. The impact of the explosion was severe, causing panic and damaging numerous vehicles. Some vehicles were even thrown off the road by the sheer force of the blast.

Xolani Fihla, a spokesperson, stated that law enforcement officials from JMPD and the police were on-site to cordon off the area and ensure the safety of all citizens. Additionally, a "contraflow traffic management system" would be implemented on Rahima Moosa Street between 6 am and 2 pm to redirect vehicles heading to the MTN taxi rank. After 2 pm, traffic would flow in the opposite direction to allow vehicles to exit the CBD.


The closures will remain in place until specialists assess the damage and restore the affected roadway. The incident has caused significant disruption and concern in the area as authorities work to address the situation and support those affected.
