An orange alert has been issued in ten Tamil Nadu districts, including Chennai, for heavy rainfall expected from October 12 to 15 as the northeast monsoon approaches. A well-marked low-pressure area is likely to intensify, prompting warnings for fishermen and forecasts of thunderstorms and temperature fluctuations.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued an orange alert for ten districts in Tamil Nadu, forecasting heavy rainfall from October 12 to 15 as the northeast monsoon approaches. The districts affected include Chennai, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and the ghat areas of Coimbatore and Tirupur.
An orange alert indicates that residents should prepare for possible adverse weather conditions. The forecast follows the development of a well-marked low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea, which has been moving northwest and is expected to intensify into a depression over the Arabian Sea by October 13. The RMC reports that the cyclonic circulation associated with this system extends up to 5.8 kilometers above mean sea level.
In addition to the orange alert, the RMC has predicted moderate to very heavy rainfall for various regions in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry in the coming week. Areas such as Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, and Thoothukudi, as well as the ghat regions of Coimbatore and Tirupur, are under heavy rainfall warnings. Other districts at risk include Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, Tenkasi, Madurai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, and Pudukkottai.

Fishermen have been warned against venturing into the sea due to expected squally weather, with wind speeds reaching 35 to 45 km/h, gusting up to 55 km/h. Following a period of heat, Chennai is expected to experience cloud cover, moderate rain, thunderstorms, and temperatures ranging from 25 to 33°C.
