Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is facing legal action for allegedly posting derogatory content against Andhra Pradesh CM Naidu and his deputy. The case is part of a larger crackdown on abusive social media posts, sparking accusations of political bias.
Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is under scrutiny for social media posts allegedly targeting Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan. The posts were reportedly made during the promotion of Varma's upcoming film Vyuham, which is based on the life of YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.
A complaint by a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader led to the registration of a case against Varma under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the IT Act. Police accused Varma of posting defamatory content, including morphed images, and sought his appearance for questioning. Despite receiving notices, Varma did not appear, prompting a police visit to his Hyderabad residence. His lawyer suggested virtual questioning, citing technological advancements.
The Andhra Pradesh High Court had earlier dismissed Varma’s plea to quash the case, directing him to file for bail.
The case is part of a broader crackdown on alleged abusive content against leaders of the ruling TDP-Jana Sena alliance. Over 300 YSRCP activists have been arrested or detained for allegedly posting obscene or defamatory material on social media, often targeting women leaders.
TDP leaders, including Naidu, have condemned the rise in abusive comments online, with Naidu referencing personal attacks against his family and colleagues in the state assembly.

YSRCP supporters claim the police actions are politically motivated, accusing the authorities of favoring the ruling TDP. Party legal cell chief M Manohar Reddy stated that while hundreds of cases were filed against YSRCP activists, similar complaints against TDP leaders remain unaddressed.
This case underscores the growing influence of social media in Indian politics and the contentious relationship between political rivals in Andhra Pradesh.
