Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi’s Fate Hangs in the Balance as Judge Reserves Verdict, next hearing on April 20

Political Showdown in Surat:-

On Thursday, a sessions Court in Surat, Gujarat, is expected to deliver its decision regarding the plea made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, seeking to temporarily halt his conviction in a criminal defamation case from 2019. This case pertains to a statement made by Gandhi regarding the "Modi surname."

If the court grants his request, Gandhi will be able to resume his position as a Member of Parliament. However, last month, he was disqualified from his position in the Lok Sabha due to his conviction in the same case.

On March 23, Rahul Gandhi was convicted in a defamation case by a Surat court in Gujarat and was sentenced to two years in jail. As a result, he was disqualified as a Lok Sabha member from the date of the verdict. However, he was granted bail by the court and permitted to appeal to a higher court within a month.

In his appeal filed on April 3, Gandhi criticized the verdict, calling it "erroneous and patently perverse," and stated that he was sentenced in a way that could lead to disqualification as a Member of Parliament. He also alleged that the trial court had treated him harshly and that his status as an MP had significantly influenced the decision. Furthermore, he stated that there was no such thing as a specific "Modi community or samaj" on record.

Gandhi's legal representatives submitted two requests to the court, one for bail until the outcome of his appeal and another to delay the conviction until the appeal is decided. Recently, a court presided over by Additional Sessions Judge RP Mogera heard arguments on Gandhi's application for a postponement of his conviction and scheduled a decision for April 20th.

According to Kapil Sibal's statement to NDTV, Rahul Gandhi can continue as a Member of Parliament only if his conviction in the defamation case is suspended or stayed. In response to this development, the Congress party has scheduled a meeting of its senior leaders at 5 pm today to discuss and plan their next steps. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge stated that during the meeting, they will devise a strategy to move forward in this situation.
