President
Droupadi Murmu has given her consent to rename the renowned Nehru Memorial
Museum and Library (NMML) as the "Prime Ministers' Museum." This
decision, announced in a Union cabinet secretariat notification dated August
30, brings a symbolic shift in the identity of the institution.
This change
follows a resolution passed during a special meeting of the NMML Society held
in mid-June, where members decided to alter the society's name to "PMML
Society." The Ministry of Culture subsequently announced its intention to
transform the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society into the "Prime
Ministers' Museum and Library Society."
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who serves as the Vice-President of the Society, presided over the pivotal meeting that endorsed this transition.
The project's
genesis traces back to the 162nd meeting of the Executive Council of NMML in
November 2016. This initiative culminated in the opening of the Pradhanmantri
Sangrahalaya to the public on April 21 last year.
Notably, the inauguration ceremony lacked the presence of any members from the Nehru-Gandhi family, despite their historical contributions to the nation. Three members of this iconic family, namely Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi, have all held the position of Prime Minister in India.
The Ministry of
Culture highlighted that the museum seamlessly combines the renovated Nehru
Museum building, now equipped with technologically advanced exhibits detailing
Jawaharlal Nehru's life and contributions, with a new structure narrating the
journeys of various Prime Ministers in steering the nation through diverse
challenges. This inclusive approach aims to recognize the efforts of all Prime
Ministers, thus fostering institutional memory democratization.
